Halcyon Days was founded by Susan Benjamin in 1950 as a Mayfair emporium specialising in antiques and small enamel boxes. In 1970, Benjamin collaborated with the Marshall family and an enamel manufacturer in Bilston to revive the traditional English art of enamelling on copper. The resulting range was launched under the Bilston & Battersea Enamels name and became the foundation of Halcyon Days' renowned enamel boxes.

The revival was significant because enamelling on copper had been an important English craft during the 18th century but had largely disappeared by the 19th century. Halcyon Days helped reintroduce the technique, combining traditional enamelling methods with finely detailed decorative designs.

The company's relationship with the British Royal Family also began remarkably early. In 1970, Queen Elizabeth The Queen Mother commissioned a Halcyon Days enamel box depicting Clarence House. Just two years later, in 1972, Halcyon Days was granted its first Royal Warrant by The Queen Mother as a supplier of objets d'art to the Royal Household. Queen Elizabeth II's Royal Warrant followed in 1978.

The two Royal appointment crests preserved inside your original presentation box therefore add an especially interesting piece of provenance and context to this vintage enamel box. They reflect Halcyon Days' long-standing association with the Royal Household and help place the piece within the company's important period of Royal patronage.

Why You’ll Love It

A particularly charming example of vintage English enamel craftsmanship, this little Halcyon Days box combines a beautifully nostalgic cat and kitten design with an interesting piece of British manufacturing and Royal history. The original blue velvet-lined presentation box and its two Royal appointment crests make it more than simply a decorative trinket box — they add to its appeal as a collectible piece of vintage Halcyon Days memorabilia.

The combination of the Bilston & Battersea Enamels mark, Halcyon Days design attribution, Made in England origin, enamel-on-copper construction and original Royal presentation box makes this an appealing find for collectors of vintage English enamelware, Halcyon Days boxes and miniature decorative boxes.

//cdn.shopify.com/s/files/1/0568/4599/2118/files/vintage-halcyon-days-bilston-and-battersea-enamels-cat-kitten-miniature-enamel-trinket-818.jpg?v=1789758503
