A beautifully restored hand-painted blanket box by furniture artist Chloe Kempster. Named The Cheshire after its charming countryside character, this versatile storage piece combines rustic heritage with timeless decorative artistry, creating a distinctive focal point for the home.
Dating from the 1930s to 1940s, The Cheshire is a characterful utility blanket box full of authentic vintage charm. Its generous proportions provide ample and flexible storage, while the beautifully carved floral detailing and decorative frieze set it apart from more conventional pieces. Thoughtfully restored and reimagined for modern living, the ottoman has been hand-painted with a classic striped design across the lid and sides, bringing a fresh yet timeless aesthetic to this much-loved piece.
Following extensive preparation of the original wooden frame, the cabinet has been professionally refinished in soft country shades of green and off-white. Inspired by traditional cottage and farmhouse interiors, the carefully selected palette creates a calm and inviting presence while complementing both classic and contemporary spaces.
Particular attention has been given to the original decorative details. The floral carvings surrounding the lid and the carved front frieze have been carefully stripped back from their original dark varnish to reveal a lighter natural tone beneath. This contrast beautifully highlights the craftsmanship of the piece and celebrates the decorative features often absent from modern furniture. The result is a striking blend of painted and natural wood finishes that enhances both depth and character.
To complete the design, the painted finish has been subtly aged to create a more authentic, lived-in appearance while remaining smooth and practical for everyday use. The interior has been nourished with natural oil to replenish the wood, leaving it clean, tidy and ready for storage.
The Cheshire offers generous internal space for blankets, bedding, clothing, shoes or household essentials. It retains its original castors for easy movement, together with the original stopper chain designed to prevent the lid from opening too far and protect the hinges.
The combination of a genuine vintage piece and an entirely bespoke hand-painted finish ensures that The Cheshire is completely unique. Whether placed in a bedroom, hallway, living room or entranceway, it brings warmth, character and practical storage while serving as a beautiful statement piece within the interior.

Condition
Presented in great vintage condition, The Cheshire stands solid and sturdy, with the original castors fully intact and the lid operating smoothly. The interior has been carefully oiled to preserve the natural wood and prepare it for immediate use.
As with all authentic vintage furniture, gentle signs of age and previous use may be present, adding to the piece’s character and authenticity. Dating from the 1940s, this utility blanket box has been professionally refinished to a high standard, with smooth paintwork and a deliberately rustic appearance that enhances its heritage appeal.
